Two hours north of Melbourne sits the regional city of Shepparton, a popular tourist spot with a diverse cultural heritage. Located in the heart of the town is a beacon for arts and cultural enrichment – the Shepparton Arts Museum (SAM).
It’s a popular attraction for locals and tourist alike- filled with art, pottery, visuals, sculptures and so much more. This space brings together the community with its diverse exhibitions and active programs for all.
The expansion of the current SAM site includes the new 5 story building designed as a museum, visitors centre, art gallery, café, office and event space all in one. This multipurpose building is opening doors to the public in November 2021. It makes use of the impressive views of Victoria Park Lake while showcasing modern architecture.
The design of any gallery must take into account three key elements: space, light and sound. It helps ensure each piece of art is displayed in the best possible way – and the new Shepparton Art Museum is no exception to these rules.
Gallery spaces are generally large with mostly hard surfaces, which can be difficult environment for a noise control. To reduce distractions with loud sounds, perforated plasterboard ceilings – VoglFuge was used throughout. This helped to subtly control sound, while maintaining the galleries modern and contemporary feel.
The benefit of VoglFuge plasterboard ceilings is its seamless look with acoustic control. Light fittings can easily be installed to ensure brightness and darkness to feature pieces of art.
In the buildings office and conference rooms perforated panels to the walls and ceilings have been used in a rich amber toned timber. Visually appealing, but functional ensuing busy meetings don’t disturb any visitors to the space.
The functionality hasn’t stopped there, with custom sliding walls added to meeting rooms to create a truly versatile space. An operable wall was installed in conjunction with Lotus Doors featuring Au.diPanel to the meeting room. Giving the ability to efficiently divide the space for smaller or larger meetings.
The inbuilt café and bar is ideal for visitors to relax, or even for hosting events. The large café is located on the first level, with an adjoining deck area that leads to a stunning path around Victoria Park Lake. The roof top bar is located on Level 4 with a spectacular roof top viewing deck.
Noise control and modern aesthetics were are priority, so Au.diPanel ceiling panels were installed to control sound and give visual appeal.
The new SAM building is so much more than a museum, it’s a game changer for Shepparton and regional Victoria and provides an immersive experience for all.
